File delete via FTP ?

Hi,
One more thing that has been puzzling me in the past two weeks: deletion of files via an FTP client.
I currently use FileZilla as an FTP client towards my Alphaserver (VMS 8.2, ODS-5).
Whenever I try to delete a file on the Alpha, the FTP client shows no error but the file is not deleted !
I must be missing something silly here too ... ?

Very few Windows FTP clients support VMS properly. The path specification syntax and the version numbers play havoc with them.
2 things: (1) Most VMS FTP servers can be set to emulate *nix, in other words the clients will not get confused as paths etc will be relayed in *nix format. (2) Some FTP clients have special VMS-centric features that can be enabled (I'm pretty sure FileZilla *does* have this somewhere)
I use FileZilla to TCPWare and this works fine (from memory, at least

Oh boy, do I feel dumb

!
You were right on the money again: FileZilla has an option "show all VMS file versions" and when this option is enabled, you obviously get to see all file versions, but you can delete files without any probleem too

.
BTW I'm running the default FTP server that comes with the HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS during the installation.
or by protection!

Another reason why files are not deleted is that its protection prevents it. Non-empty directories cannot be deleted either.
Most FTP clients will not issue a warning, or transfer the VMS message.

You can do that with Grid Stacks, but you will need to upgrade either to Nexus Ultimate or Winstep Xtreme.
The free version of the Nexus dock does not support Grid Stacks.
